I don't get how people are falling for such an obvious ruse.
The Knight doesn't care about getting Toriel at all. It slowly sucked her so the Fun Gang would fight it and it could show them how it dominates. The whole thing was just passing time till Undyne showed up.
It should be abundantly clear by how the Knight BOOKS IT after Undyne appears that she's the thing it was trying to get. No slow sucking hand shit, just a full on transformation and kidnapping.

I don't even think the Knight was looking for Toriel in the church. That's what Susie is led to believe, but it seems just as possible that the Knight is there for another sacrifice, this time being Alvin. Someone probably convinced him he could see his dad again if he dug up the hammer and opened a Fountain. But when he did, The Knight showed up before he could do anything and he had to hide from it. I'm betting he's the one in that last room Kris wouldn't open, either with the Knight or still hiding.
