I'm in the camp that it's a therapist. Chapter 4's egg room is clearly art therapy and directly brings up the idea of the tree being there to cover up some unspeakable, messy truth.
Something really awful happened to Kris, probably relating to when they got the SOUL, and Kris is doing their damnedest to shirk their memories of everyone to do with the event. The therapist is able to poke through the mental firewall sometimes because he was always kind and encouraging.
