The mayor of Tuscaloosa wants the University of Alabama to stop having a spring game due to a large increase in security incidents during the event.
>On A-Day in 2021, Tuscaloosa police responded to 271 calls for service on the day of the game, from a 24-hour period on early Saturday morning through early Sunday morning. Some of the incidents officers responded to resulted in multiple arrests, with six weapons, including an AK-47 with a fully loaded magazine, being seized by police. Those arrested included a 16-year-old from Hoover, a 20-year-old from Birmingham and a 19-year-old from Moundville.
The city has a budget for game days in the autumn. The increase in economic activity in the city on those days easily funds the security costs, but the spring game doesn't bring enough money into the town to make it worthwhile in the current social environment.
