Shadouge is nice because it's one of the few relationships in Sonic that was ever allowed to grow. SA2 > Heroes > Battle > 06, their whole dynamic evolves into a mutual trust. It doesn't need to be romantic even, it's just cool that the two antihero characters have each other to depend on when they were previously alone. But all of that development is from the 2000s, so they have to backtrack and tell us that "Uh, Team Dark aren't friends!" or whatever.
