Imagine the entire scenario of Shadow’s backstory if told through a horror lens.
Everything about his story is the same. ARK, Maria, Gerald, Black Arms, all of that, but put some of that in a new context.

The gold stuff earlier today was funny. Silver's incarnations are so different from each other that they completely change what his dynamic with her would even be.
Gold is an OC designed to complement Silver in the most obvious way. A counterpart and reflection of him, but because she was made by Evan, she's a counterpart of a juvenile and emotionally weak Silver.
Gold's entire character would change if she was actually created with Game Silver in mind. She's like the true counterpart of Surge in this way. Both Tenrecs have their personalities and backstories written with an OOC hedgehog in mind.

Shadow and Rouge is a professional collaboration between the two working together for the sole purpose of aligned goals. They are not friends. In spite of that fact, Shadow has profoundly changed Rouge on a deep and personal level, as his own selfless dedication to Maria's wish, and things like that, is also a deep contrast to her own way of life. Rouge has consistently had to play a supportive, almost maternal role for Shadow on several occasions. And thus, her initial selfish and greedy behavior melts away entirely to reveal a very loyal and caring person that will stand by Shadow's side and support him no matter what happens.
Rouge's core-character is defined by her dynamic with Knuckles: she is a selfish double-crossing spy who only cares about her own personal benefit, and is obsessed with jewels. Her dynamic with Shadow forces her to act unlike herself, showcasing a more genuine side that is loyal and selfless as a supportive figure for Shadow. This same thing is also there with Knuckles, but the context changes heavily because she is not Knuckles' ally, she is Knuckles' rival so the two always fight. And over time, her more genuine side could be found beneath the jewel thief/spy persona, but it's not going to be as vivid as with Shadow, where her being a jewel thief means absolutely nothing and she's just there to be another discount Maria.
