This is an old, old joke that is still the common perception outside of stagnant cesspools on the internet that spend too much time circling a point.

Spider-Man is always been seen as "a loser" in universe. That's been part of the charm. The audience, and Peter's closest friends, know who he is, but in public he's some schmuck making a buck off pictures and as Spider-Man he's a wisecracking chatterbox intentionally letting his id out most of the time. That tension has been fundamental to the character. And as he grew bigger and more popular, it added another layer to the joke. Spider-Man is one of, if not potentially THE, most popular superhero. It's a bit of dramatic irony that in universe people give him a hard time. That shit keeps happening to him. It's supposed to be toothless because everyone knows he's actually basically the MC of the entire Marvel Universe.

And so it goes for Spider-Characters. It's another layer of irony entirely that characters who only exist to mooch of his popularity similar think they're hot shit. It's another aspect of Spider-Man getting shit on by the universe despite being a huge deal for the audience.

Now, obviously we're living in the present. And so some of these writers are genuinely weirdos with chips on their shoulder using these characters to shit on Peter because he's a decades old, popular white hero. But most of the time, even now, it's just a joke. As bad as Spider-Man has it nowadays, only fools think he's not going to be the main Spider-Man long into this century. People are afraid these boring, bland, DEI replacements will take over, but its their very blandness, their replacementness, that hampers them. It's because Spider-Man is ultimately untouchable that these jokes are made.
