the thing with trauma is that it often locks your development in time to when you experienced that trauma until you actually start properly getting over it, but is short the deserter basically never grew up he never had any chance to move on he was that same idiotic child from when he saw all his friends die to being so old the bug assisteddementia started kicking in.
and unfortunately there are ALOT of people who are still basically children/teenagers mentally despite being fully grown adults IRL aswell
