to be honest I dont think kato is all that responsible for the state of kiseki in terms of if they are selling well or not.
Although I dont think kiseki is especially good anymore or has been for a long time, and i think kato was a particularly controlling and retarded kind of person, the lack of a clear director doing ANY real directing on the series life blood is a clear miss that while I cant prove isn't his fault, seems unlikely to be something even he would be stupid enough to enforce, given that gagarve, ys, and other falcom games all had obvious directorial oversight to their betterment. if kato allowed it back then, why would he disallow it now? I think it's that there's nobody that has the final say. Just look at the process in the psp crossbell tone shift. they fully admitted it was basically a democratic process. Personally I think the skill of a director is closer to what sakurai said, where the director is making severe calls but uses his greater agency to make it possible for the supporting cast of developers to add instead of just obey.
But when we look at calvard we dont just see a dumptruck full of slop, its also clear that they don't have any idea what theyre going to write or what kind of story they are trying to tell.
