i'm with you, my dad was a coast guard officer and he made us behave at least somewhat decently. No swearing ever, stand up straight and speak clearly, say yes sir and thank you ma'am, everyone eats dinner together at the dinner table and contributes to the conversation, etc. They also expected total respect. The concept of talking back to our parents, or arguing with them or saying no was just something that didn't exist growing up.
There are some things I fault my parents for, but being "raised right" was never really one, and now as a parent myself I have additional appreciation for it. You can't be /tip/ without that.
Since I'm on the topic, it turns out that my dad was like, extremely /tip/ during his Academy days. He has a box of rowing jerseys from teams they beat and there are Yale and a bunch of other Ivy names in that box (I guess the tradition was that if you lose you have to give your jersey to the other team). I mentioned that I was ordering some loafers and he told me about how they would wear the "norwegian shoes" and you had to put a big penny in the slot. And a bunch of other stuff, working on a buoy tender on the great lakes in the summer. Anyway, I figured if anyone would enjoy this blogpost, it would be you guys.
