duelist kingdom served its purpose to get us kids invested in the game because of dark magician and Blue-Eyes all while preparing us to actually follow the rules with the battle city arc. I know that as teens we didn't follow the rules of the game until the time we wanted to enter locals and compete.

its something a lot of us, me included, take for granted. we've invested so much time into the game, for the love of the game not even for prizing, that when we do come across others who can't understand the game as we do we think they're dumb or something. and they're not dumb (in the traditional way), but rather they're just not as interested in learning the game as we do
