I wonder what happens to the entire genre of science fiction or maybe even society in general when we as a planet collectively accept that such fantastical concepts like FTL just aren't going to happen no matter how much we try to science. Do we bother to continue writing or consuming such stories when we can't even kid ourselves that a few centuries or millennia into the future are going to look that much more advanced from where we are now? The hopes and dreams that the 20th century's unique rapid technological advance gave are setting us for some extremely crushing civilizational disappointment. With each year we pass the date that some sci-fi classic thought we'd be at by now.
