This can't really be answered without an in-person inspection, but are you using the basic plastic pedals that came with your bike? If so, those should really be thought of as 'test ride pedals.' Assuming that's the issue, they need to be tightened (or ideally, replaced) before you keep riding the bike, otherwise the friction in the bearing will cause the pedal spindle to unthread and if you don't catch this in time you'll end up stripping the threads in the crank arm.

Like previous anon said, post your craigslist and folks here are happy to help sort things that might worth looking at. But buying used is a gamble if you're starting with zero knowledge, so I'd recommend looking for bike shops near you that have used bikes or a bike coop.
