Yeah I find that much more believable because it came from Naka. Although I admit part of me wants to disprove it because I feel it seems kinda lame if the name came from some marketing guy who thought it would sell more instead of a creative decision. But whatever, I like the name regardless, and at the end of the day the games are designed to appeal to people and make money either way

I think it's because most people just don't know "Badnik" is a US invention to begin with, or they didn't know for the longest time and got used to it. It being based off the name Robotnik probably contributes as well. It also doesn't help that they managed to sneak in Badnik in Lost World iirc so now it's kinda a part of the games too. It's similar to how people still use "Power Sneakers" (ew) "Insta Shield" (nonsense), and more obscure stuff "Shields" (they're actually called Barriers)
