Yep, it's a pain. Danbooru is nigh worthless with vast majority of the images being very simple fanart or promos by artists with either 20 or 20000 posts, while e621 has a lot of garbage-quality stuff. I find the best way to look around civitai (and here) for what artists people use and then play around with mixing them to get a feel for how an artist tag works.
