You purchase software with an expectation that it will function as advertised on the platform it was made to function on.
If a critical piece of that software's function is destroyed by the company itself I'm pretty sure that may be grounds for some sort of civil lawsuit.

I'm pretty sure that they would have to put a definitive end date in the license agreement if they were going to do that.
In enterprise level software they have support lifetimes that are known in advance because of you had a problem and that company just said "oh well we just decided it wasn't doing enough for us so we decided to stop supporting it" arbitrarily that company would get sued.

Video game companies are software companies but they've been able to dock around for so long because of the attitude that they're just toy products.
But it's that attitude that may make them the stepping stone to smacking up all these other software companies.
