If you hit the boost button with tank legs, you just go upwards instead of sliding around with bipedals, reverse joints or quadrupedals, where with those you'd have to hit it twice in succession in order to start going upwards.
All I was doing is basically just hitting it at the right times and for long enough to keep me off of the floor, because moving in the air in oldgen AC caps you to 80% of your top booster speed. The tank legs I posted have the best top booster speed out of all tank legs (hence why it looks like a race car). It's an intended mechanic they didn't decide to bring back.
