I did beat it. Realistically it's hard to properly judge a turn-based game within 2 hours. I just endured through to validate the money spent. Both games are on GOG by the way, so you can easily pirate if you want to give it a try without a time limit. The sequel apparently improves on some of the flaws of the 1st game, but from what I've read it didn't seem like enough.
