On the subject of "secret horror games", Home Safety Hotline did an actually good version of this, by not being so tryhard, keeping it to a few light creepy elements or audio, and mixing it with a lot of black comedy, and ultimately the weirdness winds up being more whimsical in tone. Just played it recently and it stood out for striking the balance.
