It didn't end at EW. Like... the whole fucking story ends there and it's a story driven game.
FF games have endings, we beat the final boss, beat the super boss, every main and side character had their stories told, hell every villain had their stories told, every region is cleared of it's problems, and even the primal conundrum is solved.
If this was a normal FF game (you) and the whole party are level 99 with BiS weapons doling out 9999 <Attack> commands, for christ's sake Sanctuary is literally our character's retirement home on top of all of this.

The game fundamentally ends in EW.
