It went wrong when they hired Naoki Yoshida to cut costs. It went wrong when he single-handedly removed all the RPG elements the game had, and added absolutely nothing to build progression on over 11 years of live service development.
It went even more wrong when nobody at Square Enix took a singular look at the game and said: "Hey wait. How are you planning on making jobs, content and stories that actually feel new and worthwhile without RPG elements?"

It's basically never, and even if there's a niche mechanic that does just the right amount of damage, the margin for a shield being the breakpoint between life and death would be razor thin, or the sch would be doing more work to minmax shields than it would take to just do the mechanic correctly.

There's been an entire ongoing discussion for years about how bad WHM is in raids because it doesn't have (as many) shields and mits as the other healers. People have been trying to rework WHM forever to give it more shields and mits because mitigating attacks that do >100% damage is literally the only thing that matters in fights any more - everything else gets healed up by your infinite ogcd healing. Where have you guys been?

Anyways, the other theoretical point of shields is that they're just extra burst healing. If you have to make a heal check, stacking regens might be too slow.

Alternative conteols for a continuance, an alt start area, or a sequel:

L1: Shield. Press close as possible to attacks. Drains stamina, thwn magic, then health. Not nescessarily a phyaical sheild, can be fortifying body.

Successfully sheilded attacks makenyour own attack mush stronger. And exponential stack. Bonus diminishes with movement.

The regen and barrier healer divide is ass and actively removes skill expression from the game. If healers had to actively cooperate on both mit and heal checks, they would be less bored and skilled healers would be more noteable (currently there are an extreme amount of fraudulent healers who love to fucking hot take the job since they are playing the job on easy baby mode thanks to how simplified it gets when the game clearly informs who does what). Furthermore its lame as fuck that ast+whm is basically unplayable in pf. That's just dumb, even doing melee, caster and 2x phys range is more viable than ast+whm.

Frankly I think damage neutral gcds would be an improvement for the design space of healers. The current way makes the healers too reliant on ogcd jobs, which makes their kits too bloated. It also encourages parsetrannies to do some fraudulent toxic shit as a result. On the flip side, if you had more active gcd healing in your kit, it would break up the monotony of glare spamming since you'd have to engage in the casting process more.

I was a free player and I liked existing in the world. I didn't talk to anyone because everyone in this game gives off tranny vibes but i'm a big FF fan so I loved exploring the environments, seeng the different monsters and the music was good. part of my mornin routine was drinking a coffee while trying to collect triple triad cards.

the story in this game is genuinely one of the worst i've ever seen in a game and the NPCs are the cringiest, boring, unfunniest lame shit ever. I started skipping through every main line story because it was so bad.

There should be one Ultimate released in X.5.
X.2 and X.4 should have the variant/criterion dungeons.

The first step of the relic should be available when the initial raids release
