The companions are directly related to the main themes of the game, even if they are separate from the central family conflict.
Take Lune's story for example. Her story is about a girl growing up constrained by the choices of her parents and disallowed from ever having a choice in what her life should be. She says that ever since she was 4 years old her parents had raised her and trained her to research how to save the world and eventually become an expeditioner. She never got a chance to make her own choices and as a result she lived a very limited life that she doesn't know if she can call her own. This culminates in her final words to Renoir that he even agrees with:
>"The choices of parents leave indelible marks on their children. But ultimately, their voices have to be their own. You cannot set the boundaries of their life for them."
Each companion has a core theme that ties to the central conflict, Sciel being more about clinging to lost love and the unfairness of death, Monoco is about the question of artificial life and whether it deserves to exist etc.
