Facetiousness aside the game could have been carried on its looks and music alone but completely drops the ball on powercreep and a story that started off strong, and then fell off HARD after the first act considering the main tether to the story was killed off all in favor of SUBVERSION! of the story so that the French could hamfist their existentialism into the game. I really do not understand why every piece of French media out there needs to be "nothing matters, we are all nothing, be sad" but instead of actually subverting shit they go for depressing family drama for the 2nd and 3rd act and shove ALL of the plot into the last 5 minutes of the game.

The game is notoriously inconsistent with how it handles cues vs timing on many attacks, and I think this is just the devs being inexperienced more than a conscious effort on their part to be dicks. Sometimes the attack effect comes out too early or too late, same with the sound. Difficulty later on comes in two flavors: how delayed attacks are or how instant-chaining they are. Jump and chroma attacks have to more or less be memorized (chroma way more than jump) because reacting to their cues can make your character act too early. Certain attacks, even later on, are way, way easier to parry because the camera / visuals are nicer to the player and some are exceedingly difficult due to things like your character being obscured. I wonder if controller polling changes based on framerate.

Gameplay is rewarding and fun. Only thing I'd ask for is more of a challenge, lamp boss was biggest struggle. OST is 10/10. Story is the best I've seen in a video game. Performances are near perfect. What should Lune and Sciel have done differently? They have a pretty immediate goal in act 3. I'd have preferred Lune's side quest be about her trying to understand her reality rather than her trying to find her dead parents but other than that I don't really see what they were supposed to do. It shows she's interested with that dialogue where she asks Maelle to paint a version of her world within the canvas so Lune can explore and understand.

Disco's writing gets in the way of its ideas and themes all the time because it is indulgently amateurish. E33 commits bad writing sins in the name of gameplay pacing and mystery boxing. Basically Verso's entire character is assassinated on the altar of story pacing. Disco's missteps are much harder to ignore and forgive because they are not in service of any greater overarching purpose than the writer's pathetic ego. It's that difference in intention that makes E33 far superior to DE. E33 is constantly cognizant of the player and their experience. DE is completely unaware and uninterested in player experience. E33 knows when to shut the fuck up and deliver a powerful scene through just visuals alone. DE will constantly destroy pacing and player momentum with masturbatory superfluous details that add nothing but tedium and annoyance.

I'm as contrarian as you can get; I shit on classics all the time, and I consider small indie one-dev projects masterpieces. And I still think E33 is one of the best games of the decade. You'd have to be blind not to see their brilliant use of shot composition, of dialogue pacing, of characters shouting over one another, conveying emotion purely through facial expressions. This is easily the most /film/ game yet. And yes, that includes Silent Hill 2.

I had the same feeling with Nier:Automata which people hyped to the heavens about its story and themes, then when I played it after 6 years or so it was underwhelming. The companions are directly related to the main themes of the game, even if they are separate from the central family conflict.
Take Lune's story for example. Her story is about a girl growing up constrained by the choices of her parents and disallowed from ever having a choice in what her life should be. She says that ever since she was 4 years old her parents had raised her and trained her to research how to save the world and eventually become an expeditioner. She never got a chance to make her own choices and as a result she lived a very limited life that she doesn't know if she can call her own. This culminates in her final words to Renoir that he even agrees with:

Each companion has a core theme that ties to the central conflict, Sciel being more about clinging to lost love and the unfairness of death, Monoco is about the question of artificial life and whether it deserves to exist etc.
