Both the Jedi and Palps use the Force to control people's minds in exactly the same way
The Jedi have the pretense of moral superiority, but they're exercising their will to power just like Palpatine - using the force to position themselves in the minds of the republic citizens as necessary galactic peacekeepers, just like Palpatine positions himself in the mind of the republic at large as a necessary autocratic leader against the growing threat of civil war (which he is fomenting).
The point I am making is that the "force powers" are exactly the same. Palpatine is using them selfishly. The Jedi are using them slightly-less selfishly (although if you really look at it: still selfishly).
From this angle, the whole "light side vs. dark side" dichotomy is a real problem in Star Wars.
When there isn't anything clearly "good" in the Star Wars universe, you don't get to call people like Palpatine "evil"
The only one who really seems unambiguously "Good" in Star Wars is Luke, and that really seems to be a matter of aesthetics - he's in the right place and the right time to seem "good" aesthetically speaking.
And if you buy into the theory people have about the prequels, that Palpatine used Darth Plaguis midichlorian manipulation magic to make Shmi conceive Anakin (Anakin, I am your Father), then Palpatine created "good guy" Luke.
