Gene technically has 2 starters, Eevee is a pet he had before, and snivy was the mon he got the moment he started his journey to experience the world.
The idea was that he would come over like N and offer the ball to most of his mons.

Gene captured Absol with a healball then proceeded to berate those guys for attacking a mon without justification, and they just wanted to channel their anger on something, regardless of that actually deserving it. later he freed the Absol, healed, and told him to not bother with that village anymore. Absol followed Gene for a bit then offered absol to come with him.
