Because you don't ACTUALLY understand the lore. The Ashen One becomes the vessel of the souls of those who sacrificed themselves to accumulate curse as penitents.
It's identical thematically to how the Eternal Cities created the Moon in Elden Ring. You take their curse, and use it as coalesced Dark Sigils to contain the Usurped Dark Flame.
It's an hopeful ending as the player becomes the actual protector and Lord of Humanity
