SnK's hook is smart and original. Fighting a never ending horde of titanic naked zombies in a fantasy setting with grappling hooks and swords grabbed a western audience who couldn't get enough of zombie media in the early 2010s. Add in some mystery box writing, strong uniform design for the scouts that was easy to put together for cosplays, and high meme potential and you've got a recipe for success. The series couldn't coast on all of this forever but when it debuted it had a lot of things going for it that helped it stand out.
