Being grounded in a game where every other person TB meets can affect a planet or the universe just lowers whatever stakes there could be. It's why the Doomsday beast and other enemies are such jokes. The lore states they can destroy a planet or affect the universe but the grounded TB and crew can take them out with no problem.
Stakes occur when the MC has a chance of losing because the enemy is too powerful or a situation seems impossible for the MC. When nothing is ever a threat or difficult for the MC then there can never be any stakes. TB lost to Cocolia of all things but that meant nothing and TB then continued on like normal.
