So Spike saves the day, and pulls an umbrella out of nowhere to shield himself from the gentle rainfall. He gets praised for his good deeds, and gives an underwhelming response. Spike clarifies that even if he did save the day, it doesn't solve his central problem of how he feels about himself, and Twilight immediately understands that it's up to Spike to redeem his own wounded pride. We end with Spike narrating his thoughts as he lights fireworks for the conclusion of the games. He reflects on his feelings, and notes that "all the praise in the world means nothing if you don't feel it inside". His feelings of embarrassment and insecurity aren't going to go away just by the simple fact that he saved the day. He can understand that what he did was important, but it doesn't FEEL important to him. He isn't going to feel better by doing something amazing. He can only let go of his past mistakes and make room for good things to happen in the future. This lesson is a surprising subversion of how the show normally concludes, and it presents a pleasantly mature understanding of emotion. Spike frequently is able to 'bounce' between emotional highs and lows, even in comparison to the rest of the cast, so ending his story with more nuanced emotion highlights his character growth.
