Whites are polite because of tens of thousands of years of brutal war in Northern Europe. Civility is the social lubrication that keeps your head from being split by a war axe. Blacks thinks civility is groveling and a show of weakness, but it’s really a truce between two warriors. Break the truce at your own risk.

I lived in a SE Oakland growhouse, for a few years, as the only white guy on my street (plenty of wives).

My only caveat would be if/when they DO start testing you, push back (or perish).

Truth. If I could afford to live in a nicer (more rural) environment, I would.
My pro-tip suggestion for broke white guys: find you a low-traffic (e.g. dead-end street) owned by a minority. Always pay rent on-time, and fulfill the "just a goofy white guy, who happens to work out a lot" (i.e. be intidimidating, without being threatening).
If you respect the neighborhood, your chances of bad luck decrease significantly. Keep your overhead low, and your possessions even lower (i.e. don't make yourself a target).
