Well 1. They were trying to actually ram them 2. Ships are absolutely fucking massive and there aren't exactly any 'brakes' in water. The best you can do is sound an all back emergency bell to mitigate speed. Still, the sheer force of inertia and difficulty maneuvering a ship in a multi closing scenario means that unless both ships turned and slowed away at the last second (they weren't exactly coordinating) a collision was unavoidable

Even then though, a lot of collission at sea happen because 1. Their AIS/Radar was disabled and visibility was shit 2. They speed up when they should slow down 3. They turn left like idiots
