Judo can be a very solid old man martial art, especially if you're in a gym that prioritizes good judo and safety over maximizing scores in competition. There have been judo Olympic medalists in their early 40s and my gym has literal grandpas on the mat.

>How to tell a good dojo/instructor from a bad one?
A sign of a good one is that their students do well at tournaments without having too many outward signs of injury. Ideally they should also put a heavy emphasis on new students learning breakfalls instead of just kind of hoping you'll pick it up but that's not something you'll know until you take your trial classes. I would highly recommend drilling your breakfalls outside of class either way, they keep you safe and therefore keep you healthy enough to train.

Good judo schools drill a lot of breakfalls, including the forward-rolling breakfall. If you don't have a parkour/gymnastics place nearby but you do have a judo place (or it's cheaper) it could be worthwhile to drop by for some instruction on ukemi.
