Like when an abused wife tries to explain away her husband's slaps as "her fault", or a dictatorial regime continually puts state executions on display and everyone acts apathetic or excited because they've either lost hope or sincerely believe it's for their benefit. Something being the byproduct of conditioning can sometimes help bump something from "That's stupid" back down to "That's horrible", but it's still a fine line.
Or if you need a literary example, imagine reading 1984 and Winston Smith's constant struggle to help take down Big Brother, from the backstabs to the betrayals to the outright torture, only for his last thoughts before embracing the nothingness of death was how he'd come to love Big Brother.
