I don't understand how people don't get this. You have huge corporations that want things. They give money to politicians to give them those things. So the politician wants to get elected so he can accept bribes. What the corporations want and what the people of the country want are different things. So the politicians give the people as little as possible while still getting elected. And their opponents do the same. That's why every election is narrow as fuck. Any asshole can just win. Cannabis decriminalization was popular as hell and politicians refused to legalize it for a very long time. Until it became impossible to win elections without it. 60+% of Americans want Universal Healthcare. 90% of Americans want higher taxes on the rich. Anyone who wants to win can just do it. But they don't want those things even more.
