Yeah, but that's because it was optional. Devs couldn't count on (You) to have Dual Analog so they could not afford to put any important stuff on the sticks. Plus those were still early-ish years for 3d games on consoles in general, so elaborate camera control wasn't really necessary.
But moving into mostly 3d gaming era and also Sony making it a default thing turned it from gimmick into a necessary feature.
If you're implying that the same might happen with gyro — then I suppose it might. But I reckon some external factor would be needed for that to happen. Aiming with the right stick is what both players and devs are used to. Just making gyro a default feature on 1st party controllers probably won't be enough to change that.
