In Khadgar's case he's an existing character who is currently the strongest human mage in the setting. When the mage city was destroyed he sacrificed himself to let everyone else escape, and during the beta everyone though this was him getting killed off. It turned out he transfigured himself into mana and let himself get absorbed by the villain on the chance the others would stop her later. He came back crippled, and uses the wheelchair specifically because his mage waifu conjured it for him, even though he has other transformations and mobility options he could use if he wanted.
