OP 100% never read literature. And even if they did, they'd just judge the MC from some moral high ground instead of seeing it as a work of art. They read through a moral lens, as if fiction always has to reflect their personal values.
Imagine reading Lolita, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, or anything by Haruki Murakami like that MC who sleeps with his own mother (Kafka on the Shore) and completely missing the artistic intent and nuance because you insist on moralizing it.
OP feels the need to judge from a distance because they can't separate fiction from reality. The authors themselves couldn’t tell the difference between flesh and a brick wall, since the characters are just vessels for the themes. But somehow readers still want to self-insert into the art for whatever reason.
