We've had this discussion a lot and Maid Marian is almost universally considered the progenitor of the modern furry fandom as it's understood today. She's the original reason people started to think of it as a label all the way back in the 70s when things were just kept to limited fanzine runs, leading to the eventual creation of a true fandom in the early 80s. Yes people have been attracted to anthropomorphic characters before that, but as the concept of "being a furry"? That's all because of this fox.
