Oh yeah, FF totally is about reinvention! But that reinvention takes place inside the framework of a party based RPG with dramatic story and memorable characters, of course. If you take out the party based RPG, the dramatic story, or the memorable characters, well then you might have reinvented Final Fantasy "the wrong way". Otherwise, things really should work out. Take XV for example. Party based RPG with dramatic story and memorable characters. Despite reinventing on many, many series traditional elements in some not so stellar ways. It's one of the most successful and popular FF's of all time. The MMO games and even the spin off games have all reinvented FF in all different ways. But still, in most every case, the framework remains.
