Lots of kids, lots of seedy business and prostitutes, lots of bars trying to muscle foreigners by pressuring them in and blatantly ripping them off, and a small police presence. By US big city standards, it really isn't that bad. I would rather spend a week stuck there than an hour in Detroit, St. Louis, or Atlanta. If I was a woman, I would for sure not go alone, but if you're a moderately sized western dude, people won't bother you. Being 6ft makes you a giant in tokyo.
