The "bury your gays" trope has been around for 100 years now. The Hays Code only allowed gay characters be depicted as morally wicked, or punished, and otherwise be written as expendable.

Subverting this is "preserve your gays". In which gay characters have plot armor and can't die. However without trope awareness, the constant violence (which the character survives) looks more and more like a hate crime than "progressive writing". Their suffering is perpetuated.
