DE 2 is doomed because D9 don't have the writing ability to meaningfully course correct.
The smart thing that would actually help lessen the damage of DE 1 would be to effectually undo the entire game and have Max abandon that entire timeline. But there is zero chance we are going to get that game.
What I expect DE 2 will be is their original x-men idea with some stupid retcon present that allows then to include pricefield for marketing purposes just awkwardly tacked on.
It is frustrating that they could theoretically still salvage the franchise. But wont, just due to a combination of Square being Square, D9 not caring about the franchise and a lack of any sort of writing talent. There is no real reason why DE 2 has to bomb and LiS has to die; But all of the factors present mean that those things are going to happen inevitably.

They want LR to be a large shared universe, with B&R just being one series that takes place in it.
So there was a greater narrative need to build mythos for the universe and sequel bait. Even if it lessened the impact of the ending overall.

The girls being filled with regret and unhappy as adults is a key part of the stuff set in '22 and doubtlessly going to be a focus in the sequel.
