The actual prose and style arefar more relevant to how good a translation is than nitpicking one or two continuity errors or name choices you don't like. Fan translation also has plot/lore errors (namely the Das Rheingold thing).

You'd have to be an ESL to think the fan translation is better. It's not even about them missing the metaphor, the original TL is stilted by itself, and I remember quite a lot of bits being like that.
