Cool cactus and neat to see someone else drawing and painting plants. I avoid all geometric shapes in the landscape with the exception of a horizon. I know I’d never attempt drawing a potted plant for that reason. I was painting a bunch of landscapes but without a subject they are fairly boring and when I hike I like to be completely alone. So painting trees with personality seemed the obvious solution and some species like bristlecone pines are exceptionally well suited to drawing and painting in my experience. They come out far better with hard shadows so on overcast days I don’t bother taking reference photos. I compose generally facing the sun or diagonally towards the sun to boost shadows/contrast. No I didn’t really take any lessons other than to learn the most basic technical issues. Watching others watercolor wasn’t very helpful. If you’re never read the 7 page pdf called Watercolor Clock do your best to understand what this is about. For landscape painting in general, Carlsons Guide to Landscape Painting is outstanding but challenging to understand fully.
