>There is one thing not to do, and that is simply to drift along with the daily routine, making no extra effort. You will soon find yourself middle-aged, having done nothing more than routine jobs, and being little farther along than you were years ago. The extra effort is the difference between the great mass of mediocre artists and the comparatively small group of very good ones.

>And in Art, study can never stop. You will find sketches galore in the studio of the good man, with the paint quite fresh. The mediocre artist's sketches are old and dusty.

>I have seen so many middle-aged artists still hoping, whose samples are frayed at the edges, and thumb-marked with time. Sometimes it has been a matter of years since they sat down and actually did something to give their hopes any promise. They are plodding their lives away at something they hate, and doing nothing about it. These are the men who never seem to have had a chance. The truth is, they never seized a chance.
- Andrew Loomis, Creative Illustration

Hey man just want thanks you for your advices. One year ago I remember I talked to you and an another guy on /studies/ thread and your advices were very good.

I haven't drew much those last few months and kind of "lost" my little progress. But I plan to start a formation I found on internet for a cheap price (a french one) who seems really good but anyway, just want to thanks you. You're one of the few guys who gave honest good advices about drawing.

I'm telling for another begs, you shouldn't care about gesture and all those stuff. Start you learning path with studying a drawing with only hard shapes and value (2 values, then 3 etc...). Observation skill is the only skill one should works when he begins.

Learn measurement techniques too, but not the academics ones with the complicated stuff and grind. Just you pen and you thumb.

this is one of the nicest messages i ever got, thank you fren <3

I hope you find a practice schedule that works for you

If you speak Japanese, or ever intend to learn it, I can recommend 室井康雄 a lot. His way of thinking about drawing is how I approach it now, basically.

>>7601035
this looks really great. I also feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, but I do have one cornerstone to hang onto, and its that 2d observational skills + deep knowledge of proportions is the foundation for everything else you do. I'm sure you already know that though, given that pretty study. It's well done.

Hi fren, I'm going to give you a radical suggestion that a lot of other teachers won't tell you, but it'll work wonders, trust me.

Find a pane of glass and a marker that you can use to draw on top of that pane of glass. Make sure you can easily wipe away the marker lines from that glass wtih just a tissue. You might need to experiment a bit. I think sharpie fineliner might work.

Get a nice drawing book, say, Loomis, and trace a drawing from loomis onto that glass.

Then, copy that same drawing the best you can, on a piece of paper. This is your study.

The next thing is to overlay that glass pane tracing on top of your drawing. How close are you? How far off were you? Find just one thing to correct. Remember that. Now, copy the drawing again, trying to eliminate that mistake. Now overlay the glass again. How did you do? Find one more thing to correct. Keep going until you've eliminated a bunch of mistakes, then move onto another reference image to study

You can do this whole process much easier if you get a digital tablet though. A Huion costs like $40 bucks nowadays, very affordable. Holding the glass up above your paper and trying to study your mistakes can cause your arm muscles to cramp.

This is the fastest way to improve. Learn the front view head, the side view head, and the 3/4 head, and you can draw any head you want for the rest of your life. Do the same on the rest of the body

This is the way I learned to draw cubes, actually. I learned this from Ernest Watson.

https://youtu.be/RXb-Y_kz2aU

>>7604141
I think painting and figure drawing overlap, but also have radically different visual libraries. I have no knowledge of lighting on form, basically.

I think drawing from life retards your progress in the beginning. I used to go to cafes and sketch people like Master Stanchfield and Vilppusensei taught, but I didn't improve a lot, so I am speaking from personal experience. My art improved by lightyears doing the exercise I told you, and just generally studying the masters first. You can do whatchu want doe

if my experience doesn't convince you, I'll give you an analogy. Would you have your 5 year old kid read Hegel if he doesn't even know his abc's?

As for me, I am still studying the abc's of drawing. Hegel is still impossible for me

Hello no no it’s not my work, It s from the book I bought as you advised. The glass idea is working well and help me to be aware of my mistakes thank you! Only thing glass is thin therefor fragile and might be dangerous to handle. A transparent piece of paper is safer and would do the job . Once again thank you very much for your advice, I will post once I will have made a good enough drawing .

Literally me.

no worries! the glass thing is actually a very traditional tool btw, I first learned about it from Ernest Watson, who taught students to draw perfect cubes / ellipses this way, and I later learned that Solomon J Solomon (a famous painter, you should look up him up.) also used this glass a lot when teaching with students and when studying from the model himself. It's a 万能道具 for realz

Are these both yours? I am really into drawing and painting old trees with crazy roots. Do you have some more of these or any finished work? Here’s one of my trees. I don’t do much sketching myself but I’m frequently staring off at interesting things and imagining myself painting what I’m looking at. Seems to actually improve my painting when I do that but maybe it’s in my head. These are probably 5 minutes of pencil sketching, 2 hours of ink, then after the ink is dry the painting maybe took another hour.

Hi anon, the OP image isn't mine, it's Feng Zhu's, but i'm happy u thought it was mine :D

very nice tree btw, I love the overcast look of the colors. Drawing nature has always been a huge weakness of mine, I always focused on figure drawing, but knowing how to draw many subjects is probably more useful overall for us as aritsts

Of course drawing trees can be very forgiving in terms of getting form correctly so for me I can jump in quicker and less time with the pencil. My human faces and figures don’t tend tome come out well proportioned.

Cool cactus and neat to see someone else drawing and painting plants. I avoid all geometric shapes in the landscape with the exception of a horizon. I know I’d never attempt drawing a potted plant for that reason. I was painting a bunch of landscapes but without a subject they are fairly boring and when I hike I like to be completely alone. So painting trees with personality seemed the obvious solution and some species like bristlecone pines are exceptionally well suited to drawing and painting in my experience. They come out far better with hard shadows so on overcast days I don’t bother taking reference photos. I compose generally facing the sun or diagonally towards the sun to boost shadows/contrast. No I didn’t really take any lessons other than to learn the most basic technical issues. Watching others watercolor wasn’t very helpful. If you’re never read the 7 page pdf called Watercolor Clock do your best to understand what this is about. For landscape painting in general, Carlsons Guide to Landscape Painting is outstanding but challenging to understand fully.

This is going to sound retarded, but I've been recommended Vilppu's stuff and I don't really understand how to study it. Do I want to draw what he's drawn or just try to internalize everything he's putting down in text? In that case I don't really want to study drawing ovals and stick figures and boxcars. It's boring. I'd rather make my own gestures or box shapes.

Different anon here. I'm far from competent myself, but what I can tell you is that form and value are one of the most important factors to keep track of, where the surface turns away from the viewer etc. I highly recommend you check out Rendering in pen and ink by Arthur Guptil: https://e-hentai.org/g/2871460/1b9ce339be/ and do some exercises from it. It also has a lot of useful notes on composition, and what makes values appear lighter or darker depending on what's around it. Might also want to check out Dynamic Sketching by Peter Han.

I'm taking the pencil again since few months. I'm a beg with not very good (no to say terrible) eyes accuracy. Everytime I draw I'm frustrated, even when the drawing is ok, that certain thing or out of palce or proportions mistake.

I mostly sketch. I did a year ago all of Fun With A Pencil, a good book and enjoyed it a lot.

I saw the krenz video and understand the importance of good eyes to really improve. The thing is that I'm totally lost when it comes to the enveloppe thing. I don't really understand how to deal with it, neither do I understand how to deal with it inside too kek.

Can I just identify shapes independently at the beginning and not carrying about the enveloppe ? Or should I really focus on understand it ? Also, should I have a sketch approach (with a lot of restating) or should I do like the guys on Bargues plates videos (when I put a line, I'm sure of it exactitude) ?

Sorry for blogposting.

Hi anon, I struggle a lot with the same problems as you. I think it helps with asking yourself what you wish to achieve. Do you want to understand every detail or just the larger picture? Krenz takes a middle approach. I am a beginner too, but I think I might be able to help slightly if you post an exercise that you have trouble with.

Good work, anon. I believe you are following Hampton's course. The thing that immediately stuck out to me is the width of your bones. You have the general proportions of the vertical placement, but your legs look too stout because they are wide.
