I like the shield in Heretic + Hexen (it's sprite is a little weak tho, compared to the god-tier spriting that is Hexen) but I wish the other classes got a secondary fire for their starting weapons (or others).
Daedolon could smack people with the staff for a small knockback but little damage.
Baratus could have a jab maybe.

I like their Quake 2 version because it actually adds AI features that the original game cut, and makes it fun. But like you said I was never a fan of it before. I've always liked Heretic and Hexen, and I don't even mind the changes I've seen here so far. As for the "AHH they're fucking up the game!!" complaints, pic related. No one can take the originals away from you, and I don't give a hoot about young people not getting the same experience that I did. They never will anyway.
