It's a shame that Basil gets so shafted in the story when he is as important. It's not that we don't learn about him through Dream Basil and Stranger and a few other places, but we don't really learn the huge part that would explain why he does the thing he did that night. It's left up to speculation, and it isn't good speculation like the ending or what theorizing how bad recital practice really was. It's like a piece of his story just wasn't written. Or maybe it was removed, considering Basil's Grandma seems like she was a more significant character at various point of development.
