Nobody's ever made their own Contrast paints. That's why it took Army Painter 2 years to reverse engineer the formula, by their own accounting, and they still aren't quite there. A wash is not Contrast and Contrast are not washes. For starters, they lay down an opaque base coat in a way nobody's ever done with a home made mix. If there is no opaque base AND a deep shade with a second pigment, it's just a wash and not even sort of the same thing. Even GW only pulls it off well sometimes which is why say Snakebite Leather is so perfect but some of the others are almost just regular shades or conversely are just like a thinned opaque paint that barely leaves any highlights.

You gotta ask yourself, if it's that hard to reach with a brush (like behind a shield held near a body) then does it really need painted or is that a waste of time? A lot of that shit is going to be in deep shadow. I painted a lot of rank and file with shields off before realizing that I could have just glued them on and let the dark primer cover it and that in fact looked better anyway. You can also just slop a dark tone of some sort in there with a brush. Don't waste time on detail that isn't seen.

I have a 6' tempered glass table. I have used it to mix oils directly on for paintings. The important thing is to get the most neutral grey paper (never white or black) and tape that underneath to judge colors against. A lot of portrait painters use glass window panes and shit as well (always with grey paint on the bottom or whatever taped under.
Minis painters have no idea how much harder and worse their painting life is because almost all of them use snow white wet palettes or similar. It should all be medium grey in an ideal world.
