The worst part about this is that there are hospices, old folks' homes, etc., full of people on their literal deathbed who spent their entire lives "working their asses off" and they regret it. Oh boy how they regret it. It's probably the most common and universal regret you hear from dying old people. Yet here we are, watching another generation brewing to suffer from the same exact life regret down the line, AND defending it as if their honor depends on it.

At the scale of doing terrain pieces like that you're better off just finding out if the print filament can be melted by exposure to solvents like acetone. If yes, look up a tutorial on how to do an acetone fume bath. You basically get a large pot, put a little bit of acetone in the bottom and put it on low heat, then wait for it to offgas fumes and then lower your part into only the fumes for seconds at a time.

This immediately gets rid of print lines without having to waste a heap of time sanding. Though to be honest we live in the age of MDF terrain which will always look like it's made out of cheap wood sausage so I wouldn't be worried about layer lines on terrain.

It really isn't. Filler primer you have to apply and then sand back which will take you anywhere from 5-10 minutes per terrain piece. Acetone fume bath is about 2 minutes to set up and then 10 seconds of labour per piece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXqzw9BpjSY

I personally recommend using a metal large pot as your container; there's heaps of specific ways to go about it but the metal pot is the easiest, safest and most reliable one I know of.

Better video showing the metal pot method. Two minutes is overkill; every print I've used it on has only needed 30 seconds at most but more often just 10 seconds is sufficient. Your mileage will vary depending on the specific filament you use, though.

Contrast paint screechers have proven what was true all along: that for a huge amount of painters, painting is a painful, sadistic blood tax that they want everybody else to pay because they chose to pay it (or were tricked into paying it, by peer pressure, self-infliced autism, etc.). It's misery loves company, and nothing more. These people opted into a years-long self-harm ritual of painting their armies, and now they NEED to see other people suffer the same way, because if they can't they feel stupid for making that sacrifice themselves.

For years people were snobby little pricks, "I refuse to play someone without a painted army" "LOL here comes the GrAy TiDe" etc.

Then contrast comes along and allows a bunch of nopaints to paint their stuff. And of course the injured sadists have to move the "paint your army" goalposts, because in this new paradigm the contract painters are still getting off easier than you did. You paid a price, goddamnit! Someone has to acknowledge this!!

btw I only own one contrast paint. It's the yellow one that everyone said was great, so I wanted to try it.

Pretty airheaded post.

For starters... can we at least agree that "liking painting a model" and "liking painting a 2000 point army" and "liking painting 7000 points of your favourite army that you wanna collect everything for" are such vastly different enterprises that they're not even really comparable. At one end you have something that takes an evening, and at the other, years.

Beyond that, unpainted miniatures still have aesthetic value. Go into any art museum in the word and you will find unpainted/single colour sculpture.

Additionally, building miniatures can be fun. Converting can be fun (and is often more creative than painting). People say "I hate building but I like painting" and get no pushback, so the reverse should be true.

And lastly, for now... what if someone painting contrast, y'know, makes them like painting.

So it doesn't matter how many miniatures are in a particular force or for a particular game, I intend to be painting miniatures until I die, so it's not like a project being smaller will "save me" from painting the next week or whatever.

The two major filament types that come to mind are PLA and ABS. There's others out there as well and all sorts of crossovers but those two are the most common. ABS can be reliably treated with acetone and PLA can have the same done with ethyl acetate. Those are generally going to be what anyone ends up using for minis or terrain. We're also reaching the point where if you're willing to put in the time into adjusting settings and having long print times you can get outputs that have barely visible layer lines. Given how quickly FDM printers are advancing I'd give it another decade and the gap between resin and filament printers will be barely noticeable in terms of quality. Most of the differences will be in time to print and post-processing.

Thanks! I really enjoy the conversion part much more than painting (although I did just prime all 4 of those minis this afternoon) but I have tried the tortuga stuff and they are pretty cool.

FYI they are a bit smaller than primaris, but bigger than the new HH2.0 stuff. I did my best to pick models for this comparison with similar poses. They are perfectly in line with the deathguard 40k stuff (which I was told they originally were recasts of cleaned up DG actually).

My main beef with the tortuga stuff is that its all kinda, bubbly and thicc. Especially the mkIV stuff, I actually filed down those legs to slim them out but it was a lot of work. Great cast quality though.

That said, you just know the tacticals and devastators are going to be shitcanned in 11th. So if you want any of the parts now is the time, Im sitting on 2 extra dev boxes so I have 6 of each heavy weapon. Assault marine are already gone rip. But who knows, the new SW marines are fucking rad, some of the best poses yet. So it seems like GW is making cool stuff again.

I can buy a litre of it locally for like $20. Look for local chemical retailers that do bulk amounts of chemical sales instead of buying smaller quantities from miscellaneous retailers. Another example of this; I can buy five litres of isopropyl alcohol from a local supplier for $30, or buy a mere half a litre for $20 if I go to a local shop instead. Yeah you'll never use it all but it's kind of a trivial amount of money if you compare it to the cost of buying filler and sandpaper, much less how much you value your time spent sanding away at models.

Chemical treatment also provides uniform layer line reduction which on some prints is a huge difference. Think of every tiny nook, cranny and crevice you can't really get at with sandpaper or files. It's kind of a no-brainer if you're concerned about layer lines and doing large quantities of terrain printing. People saying that it's better to just do it with filler and sanding are ignoring the fact that you're losing a heap more time to the process and you're never going to get ideal results out of it anyway.

I won't speak authoritatively about enamels but oil paint most certainly undergoes a curing process that continues long after it's dry to the touch. In any case Citadel are emulsion paint and once completely dried out, they are goners. There are lacquers that can be dried to the bone for years and still be reconstituted, as I have done, but unless you want to experiment with lacquer thinners and resins, you are fucked once a Citadel pot dries out.

The real question here is why so many on /tg/ forgot how to maintain paint pots properly. I feel like we didn't have this problem 10 years ago and "my paints dried out" would have been mocked. Unless they're in threaded pots, that's a skill issue. Come the hell on, fa/tg/uys.

I did these for a D&D game. I used the Speedpaint metals for the steel to see how those worked. Mixed feelings on them but they work ok. Random rpg minis = freedom and are a lot of fun. I am starting to think it would look a lot better to redo the base edges in a brown instead of the grey which I used cause it's what I'd used on prior D&D minis. But would that make such a difference as to justify spending the time vs. just working on new figures?

ALSO I come to beg. Does /tg/ have the Stahly swatches for Citadel? I have seen the 6 in 1 or whatever from the last thread but I don't need a comparison across brands, just the one that shows what each paint looks like.

if painting tires you, you can also play skirmish game instead that needs 5 to 20 models

>Beyond that, unpainted miniatures still have aesthetic value. Go into any art museum in the word and you will find unpainted/single colour sculpture.
almost of the are oneoffs not produced en mass by some company, and have actual tought and passion put into them, unlike for example gw's bland cad copypasted sculpts
if you sculpt every model on your collection and do a preshade nobody will bitch about them not being painted. grey plastic looks like shit and with bare white metal you can't even see the details properly

Nobody's ever made their own Contrast paints. That's why it took Army Painter 2 years to reverse engineer the formula, by their own accounting, and they still aren't quite there. A wash is not Contrast and Contrast are not washes. For starters, they lay down an opaque base coat in a way nobody's ever done with a home made mix. If there is no opaque base AND a deep shade with a second pigment, it's just a wash and not even sort of the same thing. Even GW only pulls it off well sometimes which is why say Snakebite Leather is so perfect but some of the others are almost just regular shades or conversely are just like a thinned opaque paint that barely leaves any highlights.

You gotta ask yourself, if it's that hard to reach with a brush (like behind a shield held near a body) then does it really need painted or is that a waste of time? A lot of that shit is going to be in deep shadow. I painted a lot of rank and file with shields off before realizing that I could have just glued them on and let the dark primer cover it and that in fact looked better anyway. You can also just slop a dark tone of some sort in there with a brush. Don't waste time on detail that isn't seen.

I have a 6' tempered glass table. I have used it to mix oils directly on for paintings. The important thing is to get the most neutral grey paper (never white or black) and tape that underneath to judge colors against. A lot of portrait painters use glass window panes and shit as well (always with grey paint on the bottom or whatever taped under.

Fun fact: a lot of sculpture historically was in fact painted just like models today. Especially religious statuary and all of those white Roman and Greek ones still around today. Bare unpainted statues have typically been considered unfinished in most times and places. The idea of bare sculpture for its own sake has been a very academic/instructive thing up until probably the later parts of the Renaissance iirc. An example of the concepts of "art" vs. more practical "ilustration" in action. Those old statues of Zeus were closer in intent to an animu waifu shrine than to a Rodin in a museum.

A lot of those were also painted historically. But the metal itself was often considered valuable and decorative enough to please a god. Many were also given special coatings. Even that one there has what is, in effect, a dunk in Nuln Oil. Only, with real oil, then polished up (like drybrushing) to bring out depth. In the modern day we usually use special waxes and shit to imitate that because to get the real look takes many years of aging so we fake it or accelerate it.

Nooope. This is someone who has been involved with art restoration and study in museums for a lifetime, in fact. You fucking midwit. And it's true in every part of the world where they had access to any kind of pigment, from Africa to Melanesia to North America to China. Not just Europe. Even a lot of the old "fertility idols" (which are pregnant not fat women) have pigments on them which have been spectroanalysed etc.. Oh and most of the Egyptian statuary as well. The Field Museum had a whole book that went into it published back when the Cleopatra exhibit was touring in the early 2000s (before you were born most likely).
Part of the reason you have such a low-IQ redditor take is because you don't comprehend the entire reality of art through global history. The very idea of art for the sake of art is mostly a modern idea. Historically it served more practical purposes, ceremonial purposes, religious purposes.
Absolutely all of the existing Greek and Roman ruins have paint on them as well, btw. Ditto Mesopotamian, Chinese, Incan. All used paint whenever they could. We still have a lot of their formulas, some reverse engineered, some from records. You can buy pigments sourced in the same areas as ones they used in the ancient world even today in some cases. Ochres from Spain, reds in China.

3,000 terra cotta soldiers were painted to look lifelike. They had to pass as real inasmuch as possible, after all. What use a soldier in the next life if your retard fa/tg/uys can't paint eyes for your archers? Those 40 Clanrats are nothing.

>Originally, the figures were painted with ground precious stones, intensely fired bones (white), pigments of iron oxide (dark red), cinnabar (red), malachite (green), azurite (blue), charcoal (black), cinnabar barium copper silicate mix (Chinese purple or Han purple), tree sap from a nearby source (more than likely from the Chinese lacquer tree) (brown), and other colors including pink, lilac, red, white, and one unidentified color. The colored lacquer finish and individual facial features would have given the figures a realistic feel, with eyebrows and facial hair in black and the faces done in pink.

However, in Xi'an's dry climate, much of the color coating would flake off in less than four minutes after removing the mud surrounding the army.

First of all, welcomeβ€”and despair. You’ve chosen to paint a horde army and you’re painting it yellow/orange. That’s a lot of… let’s call it β€œtrial and error,” to put it positively.

The first thing I noticed is the messy base. Using long flock is not ideal in your case; you either need a static grass applicator or shorter grass. Also, paint it to integrate it better, just a heavy shade (whatever dark color you want) application should do the trick.

Next, the armor (or the yellow in general). It’s an okay job so far, but a light drybrush with a bright yellow should give it more punch and readability, making it look more β€œfinished.”
If you feel like it, you could even try some edge highlighting.

If you really want to push things further, this tutorial might help, especially because he paints orange skavens :
https://youtu.be/ZYLaLlXy66k
Be warned thoughβ€”it’s aimed at experienced painters.

Last thing, get a matte varnish, and apply it everywhere but your metallics.

If you need more general advice, dont hesitate, I painted many oranges rats.

A white wash would pool in the crevices, which'll probably look rather odd. Of course a drybrush may also not lighten the crevices enough, leading to an oddly high-contrast concrete. Still, could be worth a try. Or perhaps a lighter-than-the-shading grey filter (sort of a wash, but you apply it so thin it can't flow around and instead sits as an even layer over everything to tint it) followed by a light grey to white drybrush.

Absolutely not bad for a beginner. Those streaks on his spear are a nice touch. As far as I can tell everything is "in lines" and the colors are nice. Gotta jab on the base though, just covering it in static grass does not look particularly good. It's best used in small patches over some textured surface. You could use sand or maybe one of those texture pastes/gw "technical" paints. Oh and also you got some of it on the rats back. I'm just going to recommend you watch a couple of Duncan's videos to get a grasp on the basics, I think you should try doing some basic highlights next.

It looks like there's a bunch of hair that you painted over. Try to make sure the model is clean in the future. It looks like you just did the base color and then washed over it. try cleaning up the wash with your base color after it's dried to bring it back up to the initial color and then highlight with brighter colors after that. Otherwise it looks like you have pretty good brush control. I don't see any errant paint where it's not meant to be.
The clumped up static grass also looks really bad. I'm not great at basing either, so I don't have a ton of advice on that front. Try using grass tufts instead.
As a matter of personal taste, I might recommend a light dry brush of metallic paint on the head crest and back spikes just to show a little wear on the paint.

Might be somewhat mini-dependent, but you will indeed generally be looking at some variation of "stick them to something". Glue can work, and can also be a bit of a bother to get loose afterwards depending on mini, glue and what you stick it to. For very light things taping down a bit of tape sticky-side-up and sticking stuff to that can be enough. Blue-tac and similar has a tendency to "wrap around" and might thus block bits you want to paint, but can work nicely if that's not an issue.
As for what to stick them too a popsickle stick sounds like it won't give you that much to hold on to, and you'll need something to stick it into to keep the mini itself from touching whatever surface you'd otherwise put it down on, but they should work somewhat. Gluing alligator clips to BBQ skewers is another option, though probably more for loose parts than entire minis (these clips can then obviously old on to thigns, but I've also occasionally glued or Blu-tac'd stuff to them). My favourite "painting handle" at the moment is a bunch of old Tamiya paint jars I've kept around for the purpose.

you can't get more saturated than paint straight from the pot. Buy an excessively saturated paint, look for something that only uses one pigment. Mixing paints always "dulls" the color. Some paints in the pot are actually two pigments mixed together, meaning they are less vibrant than others that are single pigment.
I can't help other than that, I don't know what paints are single pigment in the miniature hobby. But honestly idk why you'd want something that'd hurt to look at.

You could alternatively trick the eye by making every other color desaturated so that the blue looks intense by comparison.

What should I do? Do I strip my redbois and start from scratch? Do I dive into my custom color scheme and have a half-and-half force? And finally, I also want to do some conversions to further personalize my dudes; is there an online gallery somewhere that I can peruse with a vast amount of photos of other peoples' conversions? At first I was trying to do it all myself but it's too much work for something they probably won't enjoy all that much, so I think I'll just play solo skirmish games. I don't know how people go out and play games with strangers. Nooope. If you dumped all your beliefs and just did what he tells you, you'd have immediate, huge improvement. You're just unable to function without training wheels so you cannot comprehend not needing them. You're walking in mud while he flies and yelling at him that he needs to slow down, like you.

>>96245295
Don't look at miniatures. Look at still lifes particularly Flemish or Dutch painters. Find one that has a lot of brass like some pots or a bugle or something, and see how it was done. The main thing is the forced highlights. You're already sort of doing this and you do not have much space to work with on those areas, but in short you want deeper, more abrupt shadows than you'd ever normally want, and sharper highlights. A bigger jump, which is sort of counter to the usual miniatures painters' idea of always wanting smooth gradual transitions.
Or for a really extreme demonstration look at Jack Kirby metal in black and white inked illustrations. It's not what you want to paint of course but it makes the principle very clear as far as forcing highlights. But really those little buckles are probably ok as-is. They'll look fake and cheesy if you push them much further at this scale. Move onto the helmet, man.

Anonymous No.96245391 >>96245431
The other thing is you want a secondary reflected color down below some of your shadows (which are really reflected shadows). Most NMM looks like shit including supposedly good stuff because it looks like some sort of pastel sugar cake decoration with no real shine or hardness to it. Which happens because people don't push the value enough on both ends.
The best thing about forced highlights and shadows is that they work at least as well with actual metallics because the principle is unchanged. My personal favorite is metallic highlights and midtones and matte, more colored shadows. It is both the most painterly and interesting and also the most realistic at the same time.

Some vaguely 19th-early 20th century themed scatter pieces I did up over the past week or two when I didn't feel like doing minis. Good way to keep busy and not get rusty with your brush work. Did it with some old half finished stuff I had laying around from years ago. Used renedra plastic infantry stand style bases boomers use for historicals for the basing.

The pile of excavated dirt/stones was done with cork rocks which I covered in a texture paste and then used kraut cover scatter mix and fixing adhesives to cover it up and give it a more believable appearance than paste alone. Loaded wheelbarrows and the shovel (not painted yet) comes from mantics terrain crate range. I wouldnt recommend it. PVC is meh quality and it's just not great for the price. There are superior options within the same range.

The makeshift workbench with tools and scrap lumber pile is from an old 4ground kit. I believe they have gone out of business but their stuff is still floating around out there.

The outhouse is from knuckleduster miniatures, I'm pretty sure. They make some pretty cool cowboy minis. Just a 5 piece MDF kit. Please note and appreciate the bird shit on the roof.

Here is a halfling commander I'm working on right now. Still a long ways to go. Thought I'd share it though.

Note, if you are looking for a really smooth white-reading paint get yourself a bottle of AK interactive Deck Tan. Probably the smoothest white-reading color I've used and it gets much closer than something like buff (ushabti bone) or an ice yellow etc. Shading is easily accomplished by diluting your wash and putting multiple layers on, more layers where the shadows should be deeper and more drawn out. I use AK interactive universal thinner to dilute washes and even make pin washes out of inks. If you want a "regular" style diluted wash, Pro Acryl has a glaze/wash medium that is the best on the market by far, imo. Putting on something like nuln oil or army painter dark tone out of the bottle onto a white just goes too hard, I find. I generally use a pin wash technique rather than the common techniques used today. That way you can just put the wash right where you want it and maintain your mid-tones. It takes longer but you can pull off multi layered multi colored clothing pieces much easier this way. Landsknecht style clothing, like the poofy shirt this guy is wearing is a good example where a pin wash will do you better. The issue there of course is time consumption though. It is much quicker to throw the wash on all over all at once, of course. Pin washing is satisfying though and a good skill to develop.

Fun fact, landsknecht mercenaries of the 16th century wore shirts hats and pants not unlike seen on this halfling. The appearance was supposed to evoke and represent the appearance of clothing tattered by battle, while also making them appear larger. Ditto for feathers and plumes on helmets or hats regarding the latter point.

Halfling is by Footsore Miniatures. Paul Hicks sculpted them, so they are true scale minis which is quite out of the ordinary for halfling minis.

Cheers bros have a gooder

I try to stay away from the stuff, but for some applications it works better than the milder stuff (brake fluid, pinesol, isopropyl, acetone, etc.)

Nah man, they just don't. The stuff infiltrates and gives you the ol' tingly sting-y frostbite.

But I have only ever used disposables. Maybe thicker reusable gloves would handle it (but the knowledge that some of the solvent is getting through would trip me out and make me feel like the gloves were perpetually decaying afterwards).

I am talking about the gel stripper that comes in a metal can. I think the main ingredient may be dichloromethane. Although weirdly I see some discussion saying that dcm is safer to use with no gloves because the vapours will evaporate before it can irritate you with skin contact (and that gloves will contain the vapour inside them, making the irritation worse). They might be talking about the liquid form, and not the gel version with other additives. I know I have splatted it past my gloves and felt a burning sensation on my forearms before.

Maybe just let them play with unpainted models for now. I've started playing Rangers of Shadowdeep with unpainted models because I'm so slow, and I might show it to my friends to get them to just buy and build minis and then they might slippery slope into painting. Playing it is definitely giving me an urge to paint the models I'm using, so it might increase my productivity rather than just painting loads of minis in preparation. Yeah I hear a lot of "unlike everyone else, I am a PERFECTIONIST with high standards" which is always coming from a nopaintz dipshit with a decade or more of unpainted (waste of money) plastic their parents will sell in an estate sale. Nobody's painting "pro" level armies, they're just letting their wasted cash collect dust in continually devaluing plastic form until they die, having painted almost none of it. It's 100000% copium.

Except that one lizardman asshole ITT, he doesn't count.

But yeah, nothing is more worthless than a guy with 2 or 3 "great" or "perfect" miniatures and 200 that go with it but will never ever be finished. The usual 500 hours Space Marine Captain is worth nothing compared to Lil' Timbo's fingernail polish painted but complete 2000 pt orc army.

Based, I'm contributing to an economy somewhere!
I haven't done too much blending or glazing really, it's mostly layer consistency, I'm still at the point where I might make some refinements to the shading/highlights so not a lot of time gone in to refine any blending yet.
I think the key for really vibrant green skin is just using a saturated yellow to mix in and build highlights that way, and only to start desaturating towards white for like the last bit of highlights. The base green was also tinted a little blue which should contrast with the warmer yellow tinted highlights but idk how significant that is. But the main thing is as soon as you start adding white to lighten things it's going to desaturate it and reduce the vibrancy in the process.

Consider the attached pic. The key to making interesting and kinda-believable goblinoid skin is to have a tan or fleshy tone along with the green. There are a ton of ways to do it but the key thing is green (or blue or purple) skin looks fake very easily unless it has some warmth to it. On top of that it's easy to have it end up looking cartoony. That might be what you want. But I think some authenticity even in very imaginary things is always a bonus. The easiest way to do this with ork flesh is to just highlight with some cream or tan mixed in rather than just going to lighter and lighter green. Thanks for coming to my Mork Talk.
