You kind of have to know what you're getting into. It's an old game that has been extremely streamlined throughout the years to make progression as easy as possible which can make it kind of overwhelming if you're actually new as you're just flooded with gifts and systems that mostly don't matter beyond mashing the "story progression mode" button and doing the growth goals in the play guide.
Also the wall of 26 characters you have to pick from at the start, some of them with two weapons each, might be brutal.
But it's a fun game and it can suck up some afternoons at the very least, just don't take it too seriously.
