I don't find creepy imagery scary or creepy. The stuff my mind can come up with, or being put into a headspace where everything is a bit off is more scary than anything a video game or movie could do.
This is why books and audio will always be the superior medium for spooky stuff. There's a reason people go on and on about the soundtrack and audio in horror films especially.
